The Concept

The Concept

A Taste of the Culture: A Field Guide to Koreatown was created to introduce noteworthy spots around Koreatown for those who are new to the area or just visiting. Inside this 10" x 7", spiral-bound guide features a list of restaurants, cafes, shops, and major landmarks, along with a map that showcases the approximate location of each spot. The design of the guide utilizes traditional Korean elements and graphics with a contemporary twist and pops of color, reminiscent of the East Asian culture.

The container for the guide is designed to allude to menus that are traditionally found in small restaurants. Graphic elements, such as the map markers, page numbers, and section dividers, are applied to the guide to root the design in Koreatown and its rich culture. The map markers are modeled after traditional, geometric Korean windows that are seen in some locations around Koreatown. The front cover features imagery of the roof of the Koreatown Pavilion Garden. The book's system is established through color coding and section markers that define shifts in the content.
